Hosted by Living Cultures in Riepe!

Join Faculty Fellow Dr. Sebastián Gil-Riaño & the Living Cultures Program Community for this biweekly event! We'll discuss films, documentaries, tv episodes, and other cultural events. Students will watch available content for these discussions asynchronously before we meet.

For our first Talking Culture session, we'll have a discussion about the first inhabitants of Philadelphia and Pennsylvania: the Lenape. Please read a short Inquirer piece provided by Sebastián below! He's also included a few questions and other short background pieces if you want to dig deeper.

Questions for discussion: Who are the original inhabitants of Philadelphia and Pennsylvania? What role do they play in Philadelphia's present and future? What should our relation to Philadelphia’s first inhabitants be?

Short reading for discussion: For local Native Americans, a reckoning over hurtful images goes way beyond one South Philadelphia statue

Optional Background Reading:

Lenape Story: 'We Are All Face'

Fulfilling a Prophecy: the Past and Present of the Lenape in Pennsylvania
