Welcome to Riepe College House!
ALL ABOUT RIEPE COLLEGE HOUSE
A mutually supportive spirit exists in Riepe. Residents are encouraged to participate wholeheartedly in the intellectual and social life of the House. The entire RA and GA team work in concert with the House Dean and four undergraduate schools to provide personal advising. Peer and academic advising sessions have been strengthened by joining forces with the Wharton School and School of Nursing.
Riepe is known for its ability to provide a “homey” living environment and its focus on intellectural and academic activities. Frequent international night dinners and a diverse schedule of Penn and community speakers make Riepe an exciting place to live. While many freshmen live in Riepe, the House is rapidly building a loyal following of returning residents who are deeply committed to the immediate community.
Riepe residents are encouraged to investigate Philadelphia. Throughout the year, the House hosts inter-hall athletic competitions, museum trips, workshops to improve computing and academic skills, movie nights, and barbecues. Centrally located on Spruce Street between 36th and 37th Streets, the House is near the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania, Childrens’ Hospital, School of Nursing, and many science labs.

RIEPE COLLEGE HOUSE POSTING POLICY
OUTDOOR
Outdoor posting on trees or on any part of the outer or inner entrance doors to the buildings is prohibited. There is one public bulletin board beneath the covered archway entrance to the oval garden (to the left of the 36th gate near Thomas Penn). This is the only location that outdoor posting is allowed.
INDOOR
There are several bulletin boards in public spaces immediately adjacent to the entrance stairwells of the buildings that comprise Riepe College House. These entrance bulletin boards are available for public posting by recognized Penn organizations, and, in fact are the only places where public posting is allowed. Public posting is strictly forbidden on all other bulletin boards throughout the House. This includes first floor bulletin boards used by the House as well as bulletin boards used by the RA/GA staff to post hall activities.
"Excessive posting is not allowed. Examples of excessive posting include, for example, the posting of several posters advertising the same group or activity right next to each other or within a relatively small area.
" Posting in such a way as to cover or deface someone else's poster is not permitted.
" Posting that causes damage to the walls or furnishings, including the use of staples, tacks, and heavy amounts of tape, is not permitted.
" Per University regulations, posting is not permitted on fire doors or exterior or interior doors.
Special Cases: In the event that an organization has an event that they would like to be publicized to the entire House, they are asked to bring their posters to the Riepe College House office during office hours where the House Coordinator or a House Manager reads and approves them. Approved posters are stamped approved and distributed to the RA/GA staff for them to display or distribute to their hall residents.
IN-HOUSE ROOM SELECTION PROCESS FOR 2009-2010
1. WHERE DO I BEGIN?
This packet contains all of the information you need to successfully complete room selection for the Fall 2008 semester. Take a few minutes to read through this packet. After that, if you have any questions, feel free to stop by the house office in Thomas Penn or e-mail Huong Stoddard at nguyenht@upenn.edu.
2. IMPORTANT DATES
December 1: Residential Program applications available
January 21: Residential Program applications due to House Deans
January 23: In-House Process begins. Applications available in the House Office, TP 103.
January 27: Room Retention Application Due. Class of 2010 applications accepted.
January 29: Class of 2011 applications accepted.
January 28: Class of 2012 applications accepted.
February 4: In-House process ends.
3. PROCESS: HOW DOES THIS WORK?
A. ROOM RETENTION
Current Riepe House residents may retain the room in which they currently reside. If the room is a single the resident MUST fill out a Riepe Room Selection form and a housing contract and indicate that he/she wishes to retain their room. No individual student will be permitted to hold a space in a double or triple for a person to fill at a later date. The roommate MAY be from outside Riepe. All parties including the roommate are required to file an additional housing department application. Students in a double or triple or other suite must indicate on the application that they wish to retain and must also indicate whom their roommates will be. You can request a suite but make sure that you indicate other choices as a back-up as well. Again, each roommate must complete the Housing Department Form listing back-up choices and sign it.
B. Room Selection
Each student wishing to enter the housing lottery must fill out an application for the lottery and return it to the Riepe House Office at Thomas Penn 103 by February 4th. Please note that as you submit your application, you will be asked to sign in a logbook.
Rooms are assigned on a first come first serve basis. Priority are given to Upperclassmen. Rising seniors will be able to submit their applications first, then rising juniors, and lastly rising sophomores. Please refer to the Housing Timeline on Page 1.
Residents will be required to finalize their University Housing Contract within 2 days of once their room is selected.
C. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
Look below for a list of rooms that are NOT retainable. The following rooms are also not retainable.
RA/GA rooms
Program Hall Rooms
modified special needs room
Regardless of the selection, Riepe College House always reserves the right to reassign you to a different room.
Please complete your top 5 preferences on both application forms (the University Housing form and the Riepe Form). Make sure to look at blue prints of the house/rooms before coming to the room selection, this information can be found at:
http://www.business-services.upenn.edu/housing/ugroomselection.html
Decide where you would like to live before you get to room selection. Figure out ahead of time who will live with whom. It is possible for 2 people to pick as a room. In the case of triples or suites, everyone can go on one number if you want. However, a student can pull people from one class to another IF that person is using the number of an upperclassman. That is, a junior can pull a sophomore into picking with the rest of the juniors so long as that sophomore is living with the junior.
If you need additional information on the room selection, contact Huong Stoddard at nguyenht@upenn.edu and/or attend the Information Session on January 15 at 6pm.
D. More on Room Selection
After selecting their rooms, students will be required to sign the University of Pennsylvania Occupancy Agreement and Housing Contract. This university document commits the student(s) to living in University housing for the 2008-2009 academic year. After contracts are signed and rooms are selected, the normal $250 change penalty applies. You cannot pick a room at Riepe and later select a room in the general lottery or inter-House room selection process.
